Conservation

Many people, young or old, have little to no knowledge of Kenya’s extraordinary landscape and wildlife. Through our Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) programmes, we aim to cultivate an interest in the environment by highlighting the practical benefits of conservation to people, as well as animals.

Raising Rothschild Giraffes

Breeding of the endangered Rothschild Giraffe is one of our main programmes.

The calves are then released into the wild at two to three-years-old when they are independent enough to survive. So far we have released more than 40 giraffes into safe game parks and conservancies across the country. We work with Kenya Wildlife Service’s (KWS) veterinary doctors to keep the tower in good health.

Conservation Education

School Visits

At AFEW we believe that to secure a better tomorrow, we must impart ideas and ideals about conservation in the younger generations today. We provide free tours to schools who pre-book, receiving over 50,000 children from all over the country every year.

The children learn environmental themes such as sustainable development, forest conservation, wetlands protection and waste management. Coupled with the thrilling experience of interacting with the giraffes, it is a trip they will never forget. We send them on their way with a wealth of resource materials as our ambassadors.

Ecology trips

The Ecology excursion is a special and exciting day’s outing for children. It starts with a trip to the Nairobi National Park and Animal Orphanage, followed by a visit to the David Sheldrick Animal Orphanage, The Ostrich and Crocodile Park in Karen and finally the Giraffe Centre. The tour ends with refreshments and exciting activities such as feeding the giraffe and watching videos on environmental subjects.

Training of Trainers workshops (TOTs)

Giraffe Centre holds workshops for primary and secondary school teachers, college lecturers and Curriculum Support Officers. The goal is to help them realise their role in environmental education and conservation education. They are tasked with applying what they have learnt with their students. With our help, they carry out projects such as school greening, waste management and food security in their communities.

Demonstration projects

**1\. Waste Management**

This micro project enables students to learn about waste sorting and the 4R concept of Re-using, Reducing, Replacing and Recycling. You can also see how we put your garbage at the centre to use for conservation.

**2\. A Tree Nursery**

Learn about seed collection, sowing, potting, planting and nursery operations such as watering, pruning and weeding. Find out more about exotic and indigenous trees and tree care. Click here for more on tree diversity and planting

3\. Biomass Fuel Production

See how different biomass materials such as waste paper, sawdust and leaves can be turned into fuel. We have a briquette making machine, with which we demonstrate the briquette-making process. There are both carbonised and non-carbonised briquettes at the centre.

4\. Compost Manure Production

AFEW, in efforts to reduce the usage of chemical fertilizers, educates about sustainable agriculture through composting. Our demonstration area has a pit where we show visitors how to make their own compost manure.

Join us for a captivating bird-watching adventure every final Saturday of the month. Immerse yourself in the wonders of nature, learn, and revel in its exquisite beauty. Participate in citizen science and delve into the fascinating world of our feathered companions.
